P.V. Ramprasad Reddy — Making India's Medicines Affordable for the World

"Healthcare access is one of the truest measures of a nation's development — and few things advance it as quietly and powerfully as an affordable, reliable medicine."

India's rise as the "pharmacy of the world" was not inevitable. It was built by entrepreneurs who, starting with very little capital, chose to bet on complex science, global regulatory approval, and decades of patient investment. P.V. Ramprasad Reddy, co-founder of Aurobindo Pharma, is one of the central figures in that story.

From a Farming Family to a Pharmaceutical Powerhouse

Penaka Venkata Ramprasad Reddy was born on 15 August 1957 in Gudur, a small village in Andhra Pradesh, the eldest of four children. His father was a farmer and his mother a homemaker — a background that instilled in him, by his own account, the values of hard work and diligence. Reddy pursued his education at Venkateshwara University in Andhra Pradesh, earning both a bachelor's and master's degree in Commerce, and began his career as a case manager at an accounting firm before rising to a commercial director role.

Founding Aurobindo Pharma from Pledged Family Silver

In 1986, Reddy partnered with his college friend and brother-in-law, K. Nityananda Reddy, a chemistry postgraduate with pharma industry experience, to found Aurobindo Pharma as a trading house for bulk drugs. The founders famously pooled resources — including pledging family silver — and raised seed capital from relatives to get the company off the ground, at a time when India was only beginning to emerge as a global sourcing base for pharmaceutical ingredients.

Building a Global Generics Giant

What began as a single manufacturing plant has, over nearly four decades, grown into a global pharmaceutical company with 35 manufacturing facilities and 9 R&D centres serving more than 150 countries. Aurobindo Pharma today produces medicines addressing diabetes, cardiovascular disease, antibiotics, anti-retrovirals, and a wide range of other therapeutic areas — with nearly three-fourths of its revenue coming from the United States and Europe, reflecting the company's deep integration into global supply chains for affordable generic medicine.

The company's growth has continued into recent years, including a 2025 deal to acquire American drugmaker Lannett, expanding Aurobindo's manufacturing footprint in the US — a signal of how far Indian pharmaceutical enterprises have come from their modest, trading-house origins.

Recognition and Philanthropy

Reddy's contributions to the pharmaceutical industry have been widely recognised, including the Padma Shri in 2010, the EY Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2011, and being named among the World Pharmaceutical Frontiers' top 35 influential people in the industry in 2008. Through the Aurobindo Foundation, established in 1996, he has supported healthcare, education, and social welfare initiatives for underprivileged communities.
