Falguni Nayar: The Banker Who Quit at 50 to Build India's Beauty-Tech Giant

"I started Nykaa at the age of 50 with no experience. I hope the Nykaa journey can inspire you to be the Nykaa of your lives."
Some entrepreneurial stories begin with a college dorm-room idea. Falguni Nayar's began after nearly two decades in investment banking — a reminder that in India's growing startup ecosystem, experience, patience, and timing can matter as much as youthful risk-taking.
As India moves towards Viksit Bharat by 2047, its consumer internet and e-commerce sector has become a defining feature of the country's economic transformation. Falguni Nayar, founder and CEO of Nykaa, built one of its most recognisable success stories — and became India's wealthiest self-made woman billionaire in the process.
Two Decades in Banking, Then a Leap
Falguni Sanjay Nayar was born on 19 February 1963 into a Gujarati household in Mumbai. She studied at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, before joining Kotak Mahindra Group in 1993, where she spent close to two decades, initially leading the mergers and acquisitions team and later opening the firm's institutional equities offices in London and New York.
That long banking career gave her deep exposure to capital markets, business building, and financial discipline — the very tools she would later need to raise capital and scale a consumer business from scratch.
Starting Nykaa at Fifty
In 2012, at the age of 49, Nayar left her senior banking career to start Nykaa, an online beauty and personal-care retail platform, with roughly ₹2 crore of her own savings, after a majority of the investors she initially approached passed on the idea. She began with just three employees, operating out of a space provided by her father, and named the company after the Sanskrit word "Nayak," meaning protagonist or hero.
Where most e-commerce competitors of the time favoured an asset-light marketplace model, Nayar made a deliberate, contrarian choice: Nykaa would be inventory-led, buying directly from beauty brands and controlling its own warehousing and fulfilment — a decision rooted in the belief that authenticity and trust were the actual product being sold, not merely convenience.
Building Trust Through Content
Nykaa's growth strategy was distinctive in another way: rather than leading with commerce, the platform built out tutorials, shade guides, and ingredient explainers first, effectively creating the "knowledge infrastructure" before the "transaction infrastructure." This content-first approach helped Nykaa build deep trust with Indian consumers navigating an unfamiliar, often confusing beauty retail landscape.
A Landmark IPO
In November 2021, Nykaa (formally FSN E-Commerce Ventures) went public, becoming the first Indian unicorn startup led by a woman to complete a successful IPO — a milestone widely covered as a watershed moment for women-led entrepreneurship in India. Nayar's stake in the company made her the country's richest self-made woman billionaire, and she was ranked among the top self-made women billionaires globally.
Since then, the company has continued to expand across beauty, wellness, and fashion, adding physical retail stores alongside its online platform, with her daughter Adwaita Nayar leaving her own career to join and help scale the business.

The Human Behind Viksit Bharat : Falguni Nayar
Falguni Nayar's story challenges a common assumption about entrepreneurship — that it belongs mainly to the young. Her journey shows that deep industry experience, financial literacy, and patience can be just as powerful a foundation for building a category-defining company.
As India's consumer internet economy matures, and as more women consider entrepreneurship at every career stage, Falguni Nayar's path from investment banker to founder of one of India's most valuable consumer businesses offers a distinctly different, and equally compelling, model of success.
Humans of Viksit Bharat celebrates individuals whose enterprise-building has expanded opportunity for India's consumers and entrepreneurs alike.
