Azim Premji: The Man Who Built More Than a Company—He Built a Legacy of Purpose

India's emergence as a global technology powerhouse has been shaped by a handful of visionary entrepreneurs who dared to dream beyond conventional business boundaries. Among these iconic leaders, Azim Hasham Premji, the Chairman Emeritus of Wipro Limited, occupies a unique place. Revered as the "Czar of the Indian IT Industry" and admired globally for his humility, ethical leadership, and extraordinary philanthropy, Premji's life is a testament to the transformative power of purpose-driven entrepreneurship.

From inheriting a modest vegetable oil business at the age of 21 to building Wipro into one of the world's leading information technology companies, Azim Premji's journey reflects resilience, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Beyond business, he has dedicated a significant portion of his wealth to education, social development, and nation-building, making him one of the world's most respected philanthropists.

As India progresses towards becoming a Viksit Bharat, Premji's contributions to technology, employment, education, and inclusive development continue to inspire entrepreneurs, policymakers, and future leaders alike.

Early Life and Education

Azim Hasham Premji was born on 24 July 1945 in Mumbai into a distinguished business family. His father, Mohamed Hasham Premji, founded Western India Vegetable Products Ltd. in 1945, a company that initially manufactured hydrogenated cooking oil under the brand name Sunflower Vanaspati.

After completing his schooling in Mumbai, Premji pursued Electrical Engineering at Stanford University in the United States. However, in 1966, following the sudden demise of his father, he returned to India before completing his degree to assume responsibility for the family business at the young age of 21.

Years later, despite already being one of India's most successful industrialists, Premji returned to Stanford and completed his engineering degree—a reflection of his lifelong commitment to learning.

Transforming a Small Manufacturing Company into a Global Technology Giant

When Azim Premji took charge, the company primarily manufactured edible oils and consumer products. Many doubted whether such a young leader could successfully steer the business.

Instead of merely preserving his father's legacy, Premji envisioned a diversified enterprise capable of competing globally.

During the 1970s and 1980s, the company expanded into consumer products, hydraulic cylinders, lighting, and engineering products. However, the defining moment came in the early 1980s when Premji identified the immense potential of the emerging information technology sector.

Recognizing that software and digital services would shape the future, he transformed Wipro into a technology company at a time when India's IT industry was still in its infancy.

This bold strategic decision would redefine both the company and India's position in the global technology landscape.

Under Azim Premji's leadership, Wipro Limited evolved into one of India's most respected multinational corporations.
