Joy Alukkas: The Jeweller Who Turned a 200-Square-Foot Thrissur Shop Into a Global Empire

"For my father, jewellery was not merely an ornament, but a symbol of emotion, celebration and legacy."
As India moves towards becoming a Viksit Bharat by 2047, few stories capture the spirit of homegrown entrepreneurship as vividly as that of Joy Alukkas, Founder and Chairman of the Joyalukkas Group.
From a modest family jewellery counter in Thrissur, Kerala, to one of the largest single-owner jewellery retail chains in the world, Joy Alukkas's journey is a story of craftsmanship, calculated risk, and an unwavering belief that trust is the most valuable metal a business can trade in.
This is the story of a man who globalised a family trade rooted in Indian tradition — and, in doing so, carried a piece of Kerala's artisanship to showrooms across the world.
Roots in Thrissur
The Joyalukkas story begins not with Joy Alukkas himself, but with his father, Alukka Joseph Varghese, who in 1956 opened a modest 200-square-foot jewellery store in Thrissur, a town long regarded as a centre of gold craftsmanship in Kerala.
Joy — the fourth of five sons — joined the family business straight after college, immersing himself in a trade built on purity, trust, and generations-old craftsmanship.
Like his brothers, he learned the business from the ground up, understanding design, sourcing, and above all, the relationship a jeweller builds with a customer.
By the time the founder passed away, the family business had grown to eleven showrooms, mostly across Kerala, with a handful in the UAE — a modest but promising base for what was to come.
A Bold Bet on the Gulf
In 1987, Joy Alukkas took a leap that would define his career: he opened a showroom in Abu Dhabi, followed swiftly by Dubai, at a time when few Indian jewellers had ventured into the Gulf. There were no playbooks to follow and no local roadmaps for an Indian entrepreneur entering an unfamiliar market.
What he carried instead was an instinct for quality and an emphasis on customer trust — values instilled by his father. The gamble paid off. The Gulf's large Indian diaspora, hungry for the familiarity of home-grown craftsmanship combined with global retail standards, responded enthusiastically.
From Family Business to Independent Empire
In 2000, the five Alukkas brothers divided the family's jewellery business. Joy took this moment as an inflection point rather than a setback, rebranding his share of the business as Joyalukkas and setting out to scale it independently.
What followed was a period of rapid, disciplined expansion — averaging four new stores a year through the 2000s, and closer to ten a year from 2011 onwards. Today, Joyalukkas operates well over 160 showrooms across countries including India, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Singapore, the UK, and the US, built into a business valued at over ₹30,000 crore.
Building a Global Standard for an Ancient Craft
Joy Alukkas's central insight was simple but powerful: jewellery buying in India and among the diaspora was largely unorganised, and there was room for a brand that combined traditional Indian craftsmanship with the transparency, certification, and retail experience customers expected of a modern global brand.
Joyalukkas built its reputation on hallmark purity, certified diamonds, and consistent design language across showrooms — while still preserving handcrafted, regionally inspired collections that reflect India's artistic heritage. It has also used Indian cinema's global reach, engaging Bollywood personalities as brand ambassadors to strengthen its connect with the diaspora.
A Legacy in Writing
In 2023, Joy Alukkas released his autobiography, Spreading Joy — How Joyalukkas Became the World's Favorite Jeweller, published by HarperCollins, chronicling the highs, hurdles, and lessons of building a global retail brand from a small-town Kerala storefront.

The Human Behind Viksit Bharat : Joy Alukkas
Joy Alukkas's journey — from a family storefront in Thrissur to a globally recognised jewellery brand — reflects a story India tells often: an entrepreneur who took an inherited trade, backed it with discipline and an eye for quality, and scaled it far beyond its origins.
As India's retail and luxury sectors continue to globalise, entrepreneurs who combine traditional craftsmanship with modern trust-building — certification, transparency, and consistent customer experience — will remain vital to the country's economic story.
Humans of Viksit Bharat celebrates individuals whose enterprises have carried Indian craftsmanship and entrepreneurship onto the world stage.
